Virtualization Architect / Engineer (ref v1)

Job Description – Virtualisation Architect/Engineer (Contract Position)

At its most basic level the role of the engineer is to capture the requirements of the virtualisation, architect a solution and then implementation. The skills required include designing, execution and documentation with an overarching need for virtualisation skills.

Designing

  • Identify and document requirements
  • Create high level design/architecture (including environment)
  • Create and maintain high level delivery plan (identifying milestones and resources)
  • Seek approval for documented requirements, design and plan
  • Re-plan post feedback/approval

Execution

  • Build development environment
  • Co-ordination of input/support of engineering staff if required
  • Develop/create solution

Documentation

  • Provide weekly progress report (in Word, sent via email and verbally presented if req.) The report should include:
    • Confirmation of progress against plan
    • Understand and triage reported issues
    • Call out blocking issues
  • Provide final documentation, including:
    • Architecture
    • Test plan, scripts and results
    • Any known (but accepted) issues/bugs
    • Any access information (IP addresses, logins, etc.)

Experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with multiple Operating Systems (Windows, Linux and Unix)
  • 5+ years of experience with the industry sector would be highly desirable
  • 3+ years experience with VMware or similar server and desktop virtualisation technologies
  • Experience with server-class hardware and related equipment is required
  • Experience in an medium-to-large enterprise scale deployments
  • Good understanding of network engineering and security principles (e.g., protocols, routing, switching, filtering, firewall rules, etc.)
  • Good project and time management skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem resolution skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as demonstrated by technical synopses, white papers, presentations, etc.
